Captain Glyn Kneebone drive-in
(Slide mouse over picture

Saturday
at Teignmouth saw new Captain Glyn Kneebone drive in to officially
start his year in office. On a miserable day with rain and hitting
into a gale force wind, Glyn managed to propel the old ball 77 yards
with a hickory shafted wooden club. Ironically in the sweepstake to
guess the distance, the winner was Glyn’s wife Carol, who generously
gave back her winnings to start the collection for the Captain’s
Charity. The charities chosen by Glyn for this year are Rowcroft
Hospice, in Torquay, and the Helen Foundation, a Teignbridge-based
charity set up for young people in the arts, in memory of local girl
and actress Helen Kirk, who tragically died in a car accident in
2005.
OTHER NEWS:
In other news Teignmouth has appointed a
new General Manager, Mark Haskell, who will be well known to the
membership as a long time Palairet player for the club. Mark, a
Chartered Accountant by trade, brings with him a wealth of
commercial experience, having previously been Finance Director and
then Managing Director of ITV Westcountry and ITV West.
Mark will be responsible for all aspects
of the Club’s activities but the day to day responsibility for the
running of golf competitions and societies has been assumed by Rob
Selley, who is now Golf Operations Manager as well as the Club’s PGA
Professional

Last Saturday’s crisp winter sunshine saw
22 teams of 3 set off in a Shotgun Texas Scramble followed by a Full
English Breakfast. The competition itself saw some very good
scoring, with birdies going in left, right and centre and a total of
33 two’s.
Winners on the day were Club
Chairman Phil Heales with his partners Glen Robbins and young
Micheal Spurway. Second was Palairet pair Dave Best and Alastair
Smith, along with B Team Capatin Taff Pugh who were only 0.1 of a
shot ahead of Jeff Thompson, Jeremy Spencer and Nick James.
The first three teams all picked up
vouchers with bottles of wine going to the teams in 4th,
5th and 6th. So with lovely weather, good
quality golf by most and a Full English Breakfast, everyone went
home happy and no doubt keen to get on with the chores waiting for
them on Saturday afternoon!!!

Sunday’s Monthly Stableford at Teignmouth
was worthy of a showing on Sky’s Extreme Sports Channel. With winds
gusting to gale force for all of the day, many were blown off
course, and the standard scratch score for the day went up by 2.
However, some did manage to master the trying conditions and the
best of those was “Taff” Pugh whose excellent 38 points edged out
Glenn Robbins on count back. Perhaps not being the tallest and
solidly built, Taff was able to maintain a stable platform in the
gusty conditions. Whatever it was good playing to all who played to
or below their handicaps. Robbins had the consolation of taking the
Division 1 prize, with Andrew Walbyoff taking the honours in
Division 2 with 36 points.
Kicking himself, must be Palairet and SDL
stalwart Dave Best. He teed off the last with 36 points already and
1 under par gross. However, he contrived to fail to register on the
18th and with it any chance of victory, having to make do
with the lowest scratch score of the day.

Last Sunday saw the first men’s
competition of the new year up at Teignmouth, with the January
Monthly Medal, and a full field enjoyed dry conditions and the
course in very good condition for the time of year. Much praise
must go to Justin Mannester and his team for the work they’re doing
on the course at the moment.
The competition itself was a tight affair
with Rae Stinton claiming the overall winners prize with a fine net
67 off his 13 handicap.
The first 3 places in Division 1 were only
split on count-back with Dave Musgrove just edging out SDL team mate
Richard Wilson to first place and Nick Rogers in 3rd on
the same score.
It was the same in Division 2 with Peter
Leggatt pipping Stephen Browning on count-back after both finished
with net 69’s. Third was Jim Masters with a net 71.

Teignmouth Golf Club press
release 1/11/11
Last Saturday saw the first Monthly Medal
of the off-season up at Teignmouth, although with firm dry
conditions and fast true greens, it was more like the main season.
However, there was a strong wind up on Haldon Moor and this was
reflected in the scoring.
The overall winner was 10 handicapper
Glenn Robbins who shot a gross 78 for a nett 68. Sounds good, but
beware all those players thinking that “if only” existed in golf
and they could have bettered that score. Glenn had his own if
only’s. Having reached the turn in level par by birdieing the 8th
and 9th, he came home in 9 over par for his winning
score. Definitley a game of 2 halves for Glenn.
In Division one father and son, Nick and
Dave Musgrove both shot gross 75’s for nett 70’s, but it was Nick’s
turn to pip his old man on count back, with Jeff Freeman coming
third on count back with the same nett score.
Division 2 was won by Ian Cameron with a
nett 71, ahead of Neil Hayes (nett 74) and Tim Kirby (nett 75)

Last Saturday Teignmouth held their end of
season Champion Of Champions Competition and Prize Giving Dinner.
The competition itself was won by Rob Davey, from Torquay, with 36
points in very testing conditions, just pipping Teignmouth’s Nick
Musgrove on count back.
This was followed by a meal and
presentation of trophies won during the golfing year. There was
also a team photo for the triumphant South Devon League winning team
(see attached). This followed a successful season which culminated
in a tight finish between Teignmouth, Stover and Churston, with
Teignmouth only winning on the last day of the season.

Teignmouth Golf Club Press
release – 26 September 2011.
Well the last day of this year’s South
Devon League proved to be every bit as tense and exciting as
expected, especially up at Teignmouth, where the home club
eventually ended the day as Champions after a tense battle with 2nd
placed Stover.
At the start of the day Teignmouth needed
a minimum of 3 ½ points to pip Stover and cover the possibility of
Churston winning 7-0 at Dainton. Churston did in fact win at
Dainton, but only by 4 -3, counting them out of the reckoning.
Back at Teignmouth their most consistent
performers this year have normally come from the first 3 groups
out. Andy Burnham and Nick James beat Andy Carpenter and Steve
Henson 2 & 1 with Burnham securing the win with his 2 putt at the 17th.
The previously unbeaten experienced pairing of Collier & Tester
however lost for the first time this season to Barry Chubb and
Callum Livingstone. Third out were father and son Dave & Nick
Musgrove, who once again brought home a point, the 7th
out of the 8 times they have played together this season. The
turning point being the 13th, where Stover’s Richard
Harbron, 1 down at the time, holed a 30 foot eagle putt from just
off the green, only for Musgrove Snr to follow him in from 15 feet
to half the hole and stay one up. From there, the Musgroves won the
difficult 14th and 15th before sealing victory
at the short 16th. Next up was Jeff Thompson & Alastair
Smith, noted for their come backs, but this time they took the lead
and a fine birdie 2 on the 16th from Thompson saw them
home.
That was 3 points in the bag. With only a
half needed from the last 2 games things were getting tense, with
Stover’s Chris Honeywell and James Harbron seeing off Best and Evans
3 & 2 it was left to the final match to decide the final outcome.
Teignmouth’s Sam Dunn & Rory Hunt held a slender 1 up lead through
15 & 16 knowing a half at 17 would clinch the title, which they duly
got with a solid par 4. However, Stover’s Jason Hampton & Mike
Copperwhite still had enough pride to win the last and so half their
match. It finished with the 18th ringed by both teams
and supporters welcoming home the final group and congratulating
Teignmouth on a fine season, in fact a fine 2 days, as the
Teignmouth Women had won the Still Cup the previous day at
Tiverton.
Unfortunately Sunday’s 36 Hole Frank Hiles Memorial Trophy, the last
County order of merit event of the season, had to be cancelled due
to Fog and rain at Teignmouth. Every effort was made to get the
event on, with several delays, followed by a reduction to 18 holes
and ironically about half an hour after it was finally cancelled the
fog cleared, the sun came out and many of the players, who had
stayed, got to play some golf, albeit only of a friendly nature.

Teignmouth Vase
Last Sunday saw the last big open meeting
of the season at Teignmouth, and what a close affair it turned out
to be. No fewer than 5 players tied on the winning score of net
67. The eventual winner, on count back over the last 6 holes, was
Dave Musgrove, whose gross 73, playing the last 6 in 1 under (3
under net) was just good enough to take the title from Glenn
Robbins, Keith Groves, Robin Sutton and “Taff” Pugh. Musgrove’s 73
was also good enough for the best scratch score, again on count
back, just edging out his SDL team mates Rory Hunt and Richard
Armitage.
This weekend sees the penultimate round of
the South Devon League with Teignmouth and Stover currently joint
top and Churston just 2 ½ points behind. A lot can change this
weekend and everything seems to be building to an exciting climax at
the end of the month.
Teignmouth Golf Club press

South Devon League
After last weekend’s round of matches the
South Devon League is continuing to heat up and heading to what
promises to be a fascinating final day later next month.
Churston went into the weekend with a lead
of half a point over Teignmouth & Stover. However, travelling to
Stover, Churston went down by 5 matches to 2, while Teignmouth
achieved the same score down at the Warren. That now puts
Teignmouth & Stover joint top with Churston 2 ½ points behind. In
the other match Dainton beat Torquay 4 – 3 at Dainton, all but
ending any feint hope Torquay still had of retaining their crown.
In the Warren v Teignmouth match, 5 of the
7 matches went to the last hole, with Teignmouth winning 3 and
halving the other 2 to show the type of fighting spirit they’ll need
in the last 2 rounds if they are to go on and take the title.
Particular mention to crucial putts holed on that last green by
Chris Evans, Nick Musgrove, Ryan Wheeler and Alistair Smith.
Smith’s for a birdie and a halved match, much the same as he did in
the previous match. Don’t make it a habit Alistair, we won’t have
any nails left at this rate.
The next round of matches take place on
Saturday 3rd September before the league reaches it’s
climax the 24th September.

Captain’s Day
It was Captain’s Day at Teignmouth last
Saturday and Captain Del King’s close friend and regular playing
companion Richard Wilson was the winner. In fact Wilson has picked
up a lot of prizes this summer as well as getting back down to 5
handicap and playing SDL and reviving a Palairet career he thought
was behind him. Maybe retiring in the spring and playing golf
almost every day since has something to do with it. Whatever the
reason I’m sure we’re all jealous.
There was also a Captains 9 hole team
event for the ladies which was won by the team of Fiona Parsons,
Rosie Burnham and Lorraine Dunn.
The day was capped off with an evening of
entertainment and dancing in the Club House and a raffle for prizes
and a car parking space for the year. In total nearly a thousand
pounds was made to add to the Captains Charity for the year,
Strokes.
This Saturday sees the next round of SDL
matches with leaders Churston going to joint 2nd place
Stover in the match of the day. Teignmouth, also joint 2nd,
half a point behind Churston, take the short trip down to the
Warren, where they will be keen to pick up as many points as
possible to keep their title aspirations alive. In the other match
Dainton entertain Torquay, with Torquay needing a large margin of
victory to keep alive any slim hopes they may have of retaining
their crown.

Torbay Cup
This weekend (6th & 7th
August) sees the annual battle for the Torbay Cup between holders
Stover, Teignmouth, Torquay, Warren, Churston and hosts, for the
first time since becoming involved, Dainton Park. Dainton are
thrilled at the prospect of holding this event and will be hoping
that home advantage may give them a chance.
The competition, which has been going
since the 1920’s, involves 6 Four-Balls, from each club, and 6
Foursomes on Saturday and 6 singles on Sunday. All play is off
scratch, so this is the elite of South Devon Golf and well worth a
visit if you want to see some quality amateur golf this weekend.
Teignmouth Club Championship
Last Sunday saw Teignmouth hold it’s Club
Championship, on a warm but overcast day, with the course playing
hard and bouncy and the greens as good as they have been for a long
time. The battle for the title was a close affair with last years
winner, Lloyd Gardener shooting a 2 under par 67 in the morning,
giving him a one shot advantage over Rich Woods. Woods, who joined
this year from Bigbury, went one better in the afternoon with a 67,
but Gardener wasn’t phased and came in with a 66 for an overall
total of 5 under par 133.
The handicap competition wasn’t so close
with 8 handicapper Max Cornish matching Gardener’s gross 67 in the
morning, for an incredible net 59. He unsurprisingly slipped to a
respectable 80 nett 72 in the afternoon, but his morning round
ensured a large margin of victory. Max recently shot a gross 71 to
win an earlier competition and puts his good form this year down to
the lessons he’s been having with Exminster pro Jon Langmead.
South Devon League
Last Saturday saw 2nd placed
Teignmouth entertain leaders Churston, in what turned out to be a
tight and tense affair. There was a victory each in the first 2
games, but the 3rd saw the Teignmouth father & son
pairing of Dave & Nick Musgrove triumphant by 8 & 7. Dave was level
par for the 11 holes played, but didn’t help his son much as his 4
under par gross virtually won the match on his own. Mention must go
to their opponents, John Jackson and Dave Mytton, who took the
defeat with great grace, particularly John who had 2 birdies which
were only good enough for halves.
Three of the last four matches all went
the distance. Churston’s Newman & Mayers getting back to all square
with Cross & Evans with a birdie on the 17th before
halving the last. Sam Dunn & Rory Hunt hung on for a 1 up victory
for Teignmouth. At that point it was 3 ½ to 2 ½ in Teignmouth’s
favour, but the last match saw Churston at 4up after 14 with Lester
Barnes and Rick Osborne seemingly in control. However, word started
filtering back that Alistair Smith and Dave Best had won 15 & 16 and
then Smith birdied 17 to go up the last 1 down. Smith hit his tee
shot on the long par 3 to 12 foot, but Lester Barnes responded with
a shot almost as close. The final green was surrounded by both
teams and a few supporters creating much tension. First Barnes
just missed his effort before Smith calmly (well maybe not) rolled
in his putt to halve the match and give Teignmouth a slender victory
by 4 matches to 3.
This result keeps Churston on top, but
only by half a point from Teignmouth and Stover, who had a
tremendous 5 – 2 victory away to reigning champions Torquay. The
other match saw Dainton finally breathing some life into their
season with a stunning 6 – 1 home victory over the Warren, which
probably leaves it looking like a three horse race with 3 rounds of
matches to come. However, don’t tell the bottom three that as with
7 points available in each match anything could still happen, and
knowing golf, probably will!

South Devon League
Teignmouth
Golf Club Men’s Section Press release 19/7/11
After a full weekend of fixtures, the
South Devon League is hotting up again. With 4 games to go, and with
all teams having played 3 home and 3 away games, everything is very
close with only 6 points covering 5 of the 6 teams in the league.
The 2 biggest winners last Saturday were Teignmouth,with a 6 ½ to ½
home win over Dainton and Churston, who trounced reigning champions
Torquay by the same margin. Churston now top the table with a 1 ½
point lead over Teignmouth, with the 2 meeting at Teignmouth a week
on Saturday (30th July). Warren beat Stover 4 to 3 in a
close match for both clubs to stay in touch, but Torquay’s heavy
defeat saw them drop to 5th and in need of a strong
finish to the season.
Back to Teignmouth’s win and with the last
2 matches coming up the last all square, the result could have been
very different. However, 2 fine putts in each match, from
experienced Chris Evans and the baby of the team, Ryan Wheeler saw
the home team record their biggest win of the season, having gone
down 4 ½ to 2 ½ at Dainton the previous week.

GOLF CLUB NEWS
On July 1st, Jon Axford,
assistant pro at Teignmouth Golf Club, and an excellent teacher of
the game, passed his final examinations at the Belfry, and
Birmingham University after 3 years of study, to become a fully
qualified PGA professional.
Jon started his golf as a junior at the
club, who quickly progressed to single figures, and then scratch
golf, having played for the county at every level. He has worked
with pro Rob Selley for seven years.
The Teignmouth Palairet team were
successful in the 3rd round of the competition when they
met the Royal North Devon team at Downes Crediton.
It was a close match coming to a
nail-biting finish for the final pair.
Jeremy Binch with Ian Wallis, and the
pairing of Chris Evans and Richard Wilson won their matches for
Teignmouth, while the RND pairings won the other two games leaving
it up to the final pairing of Andy Burnham and Nick James to clinch
the game. Things looked hopeful as this final pair were 1 up on the
17th., but they lost the 18th and had to go
to the 19th to secure the match. This they did, to the
great relief of Captain Del King and the Teignmouth supporters.
In the 4th round of the
Palairet Trophy, Teignmouth will meet Fingle Glen on July 24 at
Yelverton.

GOLF CLUB FESTIVAL WEEK
Festival Week drew many visitors from
Hampshire, Hereford, the London area , the Midlands, and farther
north, to enjoy a full week’s programme of competitions and
entertainment with members. The weather was particularly good,
except for the occasional shower and morning mist on the Tuesday
which led the morning competition to be abandoned. Nevertheless
everyone played in the afternoon foursomes. Visitors were very
impressed with the course, the greens, the facilities, and of course
the spectacular views, and many come back year after year.
Winners came from Leicestershire, the
London area, Hampshire, etc.
Next year’s festival will begin on
Saturday 7th July 2012.

Last weekend saw the Martin Cup at
Teignmouth, an eclectic competition played over both days at the
weekend. The competition is played as a medal on Saturday, with
Sunday giving players a chance to improve Saturday’s scores at each
hole. Players receiving half their handicap over the 2 rounds.
Right, that’s the boring bit, now down to the competition itself.
The overall winner with a stunning net score of 61.5 was Palairet
player Ian Wallis, who followed Saturday’s solid gross 74 with a
fine 71 on Sunday, improving his overall better ball score by 10 in
the process. There were 6 prizes on offer and 3 of the following 5
places went to one 3 ball, who teed off early on both days. From
that 3 ball, 2nd and 5th were Palairet
stalwarts Rory Hunt and Richard Armitage with 4th place
going to South Devon League regular Nick Musgrove. Things looking
good for the club teams with Palairet regular Mark Haskell taking 3rd
spot.
Incidentally, Teignmouth play their
re-arranged Palairet 2nd round match this Saturday, at
Dainton Park, against Honiton. Unfortunately that was the day the
SDL team were due to go to Dainton, so that has now been put back to
9th July, giving the other teams a chance to put some
space between themselves and Teignmouth before the next round of
matches.

Our new
“Tour Pro” Billy Hemstock - press release 13th
June 2011
Congratulations go out this week from
Teignmouth to their new “Tour Pro” Billy Hemstock. Having missed
the halfway cut in his first event on the Challenge Tour, Billy
finished in 15th place in last week’s Allianz Open, in
France. Billy won 2325 euros for his efforts, which will help
towards funding future tournaments. In fact in Sunday’s final;
round, played in attrocious conditions, there were only 4 scores
better than Billy’s 2 over par 72. Billy is now hoping to play in
the upcoming EuroPro event at Bovey Castle, where hopefully local
knowledge can produce another good result.
South Devon League
Only 1 ½ points covered the top 4 places
in the South Devon League, going into last Saturday’s round of
matches, and when the dust settled the same 4 teams were still only
separated by 2 points. Stover and Torquay fought out a draw, while
Teignmouth went to Churston. Churston won 4 ½ to 2 ½ and although
Teignmouth would of liked another point, they went away reasonably
happy with their efforts. The winning pairs for Teignmouth were
Nick James zand Andy Burnham who won 2 & 1 against Peter Chapman &
Paul Newman, and Mark Haskell and Tommy Cross who won 3 & 2 against
Rick Osbourne & Joe Davis. The other half point was secured by the
vastly experience Richard Wilson and Chris Evans. They were 2 up
with 3 to play, but Churston’s Pete Middleton & Nigel Hayden birdied
16 and 17 and were in control on the last, until Richard Wilson
holed a treacherous 10 footer to tie things up. The way things are
going we could be in for a really close season, with Warren, after a
heavy defeat of Dainton, moving within 2 ½ points of the leaders as
well to make it 5 out of the 6 teams all within striking distance of
each other.

Opportunity of
a lifetime - playing with three time major winner, Padraig
Harrington
Teignmouth Golf PGA Professional Rob
Selley, had the opportunity of a lifetime
of playing with three time major winner,
Padraig Harrington, at the Princes Golf Club, Sandwich,
close to the links of Royal St George’s,
where the Open will be held next month.
Rob
was a guest of Wilson Staff, and Cooper Agencies, Padraig Harrington
was opening a new bunker on the Princes course.
To do so, he used the original hickory
shafted sand wedge, which was the first sand wedge ever made. It had
been designed and used by Gene Sarazen, 79 years ago, when Sarazen
won the 1932 Open at Princes. Following Gene Sarazen’s design of
this club, sand wedges came into popular use. Both players being
Wilson Staff Players
Padraig gave a bunker clinic, and then
played 18 holes; three of them with Rob Selley.
After dinner, at the Question and Answer
session, Rob, himself a south Devon county academy coach for 6 – 14
year olds on behalf of England Golf and the Devon Golf Partnership,
was able to ask about junior golf development, and elite
performance, and discuss these with Harrington.
Padraig’s comment was: “On the range,
during a PGA or European tour event, you will not tell the
difference between all the pros. The game is 95% mental and 5%
technical at that level. With juniors, repeated and repeated short
game work, again and again, with your PGA pro, from the start, is
recommended, in order to learn the orthodox basics in the set-up,
aim, grip, ball position, stance, posture, and alignment.” Which he
believes the reason for the likes of Rory Mcilroy and Rickie Fowler
being so good so early in then golfing careers,
because
their were not left to their own devices as he was as a young junior
and led in the right directions with their techniques.
Would be golfers – take note. This was a
day that Rob would never forget from having putts read on the greens
by a three time major winner and ryder cup player to having a signed
picture for his four year old son.

handicapper, trying to build on one victory already this season,
which incidentally also qualified him to play with club pro Rob
Selley, at Saunton later in the summer. He started by winning the
Wednesday Stableford by 3 clear points with his fine 39 points in
blustery conditions, which also reduced his handicap to 9. Then, on
Sunday, in the Presidents Prize Medal he shot a gross 75 for a net
66 and a one shot victory to go with another reduction in his
handicap to 8. Will this new handicap stop his run or is there more
to come. Watch this space! Mention should also be made of Dave
Best’s fine gross 72 to take the lowest scratch score on another
blustery day with the course still hard and bouncy, making good
scoring difficult.
This weekend sees Teignmouth entertain The
Warren in the South Devon League. It should be a good encounter
with both clubs coming off confidence boosting victories after a
slow start to the season.

Golf Club Men’s Section Press Release 23/5/11
Teignmouth’s Billy Hemstock has recently
returned home after wintering in Florida and honing his game ready
for his debut season as a Professional. Billy turned pro back in
January after a stellar amateur career, culminating in him being
named in the England Squad for this autumn’s Walker Cup Matches
against the USA, the pinnacle of Amateur golf. However, he will now
be concentrating on getting as many starts as he can on the Europro
and Challenge Tours. He starts this week on the Challenge Tour in
Belgium, in the Telenet Trophy at the Royal Waterloo Golf Club.
Billy will also be entering qualifying for the Open Championship and
going to the Qualifying School for the European Tour later in the
year.
Last Friday Teignmouth held a fund raising
day for Billy, by way of a 4-man Texas Scramble. Ninety teams
entered and Billy was very grateful for the money raised which will
help towards his expenses in playing the various pro tours.
The competition itself provided a close
finish between 2 home based teams. With teams receiving 10 per cent
of total handicaps, the team of Jeremy Spencer, Andy Hayward, Robin
Martin and Jeff Thompson’s net 55.8 pipped Richard and Charlie
Armitage and Aiden and Alan Tolley by 0.1 of a shot. Can’t get much
closer than that!
Last Wednesday’s Stableford was won by
Richard Wilson in Division 1, with 36 points, edging out Club
Captain and playing partner Del King by a point. This was Richard’s
2nd competition win in a month, along with a 2nd,
3rd and a 4th, and all since his recent
retirement. Hopefully he’ll tire soon and give the rest of us a
chance. Division 2 was won by P.Reynolds with an excellent 43
points.
Saturday’s South Devon League encounter
saw Teignmouth entertain the current champions Torquay. Torquay
went into the game on the back of 2 big wins, with Teignmouth having
suffered a big defeat at Stover. In very windy, bouncy conditions
with firm greens, play proved very tricky for both teams. However,
the home side mastered those conditions better in producing a shock
6 – 1 winning margin. Three matches went all the way.
Firstly, Nick James & Andy Burnham
overcame Keith Thompson & Chris Overton on the last. Nick James’
fine tee shot to the back of the difficult par 3, followed by a
solid two putt for par saw the Teignmouth pair home, with neither of
the Torquay players able to manage a par themselves.
Then Dave & Nick Musgrove beat Nathan
Gilpin and Lennie Pym 1 up, having been behind most of the way
round. Two or three crucial 10 foot putts over the closing holes
from Musgrove junior turned the game the way of him and his father
after the Torquay pair failed to capitalise on some superb early
play, particularly from young Nathan Gilpin, whose prodigious
hitting saw a couple of drives push the 350 yard mark!
The 3rd match to go all the
way saw Teignmouth’s Richard Armitage and Tommy Cross just edge out
Colin Nolan and Mark Jeffrey. Dormie 2 down the Torquay pair won
the 17th to take the game down the last where a great
putt from Armitage from long range to 2 feet ultimately wasn’t
required after Cross holed from 10 feet for par and victory.
Hopefully this display will spur the home team into a challenge for
honours this season.

Golf Club Men’s Section Press release Monday 16th May
2011
Sunday saw the playing of the Hackhunter’s
Cup at Teignmouth on a fine but blustery day. This, along with firm
greens and running fairways made the course a little shorter, but
very tricky.
Despite the tricky conditions 19
handicapper Ian Cameron compiled an impressive 41 points and a
reduction in handicap, for good measure. His taming of the
conditions was so good no-one came within 3 points of him, well done
Ian. There was good form showed by some of the Palairet team with
Dave Best, Rory Hunt and Lloyd Gardner shooting 37, 37 and 36 points
respectively, which hopefully bodes well for the forthcoming 2nd
round tie against Honiton at Dartmouth.
This was followed on Monday by the Smith
Cup, a Stableford for players over 50. Thus allowing the under 55’s
an early chance of seeing what life playing in the seniors is going
to be like. The wind was even stronger than on Sunday, but
obviously the experience that comes with age showed with some
excellent scoring, with 44 points enabling Jeffrey Freeman to win by
2 points over Dave Richardson.
Last weeks’s Wednesday Stableford at
Teignmouth was well attended and followed by a Bistro Night, where
some fine dining was available. Members are reminded that this will
continue after the stableford each week, so don’t miss out. Results
of the golf side of the evening can be found below.
This weekend sees the South Devon League
team entertain reigning champions Torquay on Saturday, so this will
be a good marker as to Teignmouth’s chances of putting in a
challenge this year.
Sunday see’s the first Open Meeting of the
season, a Three Man Team Event for the Teignmouth Trophy.

May 2011 – Weekly press release from Teignmouth Golf Club
(Men’s Section)

Saturday marked the start of the South
Devon League season for Teignmouth with an away match at Stover.
The match was preceded by a joint team
photo(see attached) followed by a minute’s silence. This was for
Long standing Stover member George Vooght, who passed away suddenly
on Friday. George’s grandson John played in the match and his
father, Simon, was there to support. Seve Ballesteros was also
remembered in the minute’s silence, as he was an inspiration to many
of the more senior SDL players, and some probably only took up the
game after witnessing some of his amazing exploits on the course.
As for the match itself, Stover came out
winners by 5 matches to 2. It could have been closer had the one
game to go the distance, gone the other way. The match between
Stover’s Dan Hall and Shane Thorne and Teignmouth’s Tommy Cross and
Paul Cayless was a tight affair, with Cross holing a crucial putt on
the 16th to make the match all square. The 17th
was halved after a fine up and down, from short of the green, by
Paul Cayless, almost holing his pitch. But on the last Cayless
missed the green and Cross hit his second to the back of the
treacherous 18th green, with the pin on the front.
Neither managed to get down in two and Dan Hall’s solid par secured
victory for the home side.
The two wins for Teignmouth were secured
by the experienced pairing of Richard Wilson and Bob Collier and
Dave Musgrove and Sam Dunne. Dunne was particularly impressive with
some superb long hitting and several birdies to just stay ahead of
John Vooght and James Harbron, finally winning on the 17th
when the Stover pair both found trouble and a par 4 was enough to
clinch the match.
It should be mentioned that Teignmouth
Club Captain Del King looked after the team on Saturday, due to
vice-captain Glynn Kneebone’s absence. Glynn has recently undergone
major surgery and all at Teignmouth, and I am sure around the South
Devon Clubs, wish Glynn a speedy and full recovery.

ANNUAL HANDICAP REVIEW
THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
The Champion of Champions was played at
Teignmouth Golf Club on Saturday 23rd October 2010. This
end of season event is only open to winners of competitions during
the past year. The weather was challenging with wind and heavy
showers, but with the course in great condition the winner was Andy
Capener with 38pts, second was Tom Hicks with 36pts and third Walter
Spence with 33pts on countback
The evening was the Men’s Presentation
Evening with Trophy and competition winners presented with an
engraved glass and the appropriate trophy by the Club Captain, Bob
Collier. The President, Maurice Bell, presented the President’s
Prize to Andy Capener. This was followed by a team photo of the
Torbay Cup winners for 2010 and then a buffet and drinks with many
photos taken for posterity and memories.
The Frank Hiles Memorial Trophy
The Frank Hiles Memorial Trophy was played
at Teignmouth on Sunday 26th September. It was a glorious
autumn day with a testing wind on a course in superb condition.
There were two gross 68’s in the morning from Dave Best and Lloyd
Gardner and 70 from Jeremy Binch. Lloyd Gardner continued his fine
vein of form with a 67 in the afternoon to win by 3 shots from
Jeremy with Dave in third place. The best net score was 138 by Alan
Plunkett on countback from Andy Rogers of Fingle Glen. This
completes the Opens at Teignmouth for 2010 and by popular consent
they have all been enjoyable with some great golf played.

Devon Junior
Academy Skills Test and Stableford competition.
Thirty
nine youngsters aged from 7 – 13 years of age, from twelve clubs in
the South and East of Devon, met at Teignmouth Golf Club on Tuesday
31 August, to use the excellent practice ground, putting green, and
the first nine holes of the course for the Devon Junior Academy
Skills Test and Stableford competition.
They had been selected at their various
clubs to attend monthly coaching by the Junior Academy, usually held
at Teignmouth, and this was an afternoon of skills tests, organised
by Craig Townsend, County Development Officer, and coaches Neil
Holman of Torbay Driving Range and Rob Selley of Teignmouth Golf
Club.. Selection to attend from clubs was not just on handicap, but
on potential, attitude, and dedication too, and certainly the
juniors appeared to have these in good measure.
The young people were divided into groups,
with five Level 1 coaches acting as scorers, and they all completed
skills tests which involved chip and runs; putting from different
set distances; and bunker shots. Also they all played a Stableford
on the first nine holes, under the watchful eye of Head Coach, Neil
Holman, and county coach Rob Selley, who were looking at preparation
for shots, club selection, course management and strategy as the
players played each hole.
All the youngsters had good swings, having
been coached at their own club, and the golf Partnership Academy
concentrates on the game from 100 yards in, to hone skills towards
lowering handicaps, and moving into the Devon under 14s coaching ,
and under 16s, and subsequently furthering their game.
The Devon Partnership encourages people of
all ages into golf, and the Junior Academy certainly shows how
youngsters are being encouraged to excellence from a very early age.
The
best overall performance was done by Joseph Baker from Fingle Glen
GC on the left, and the best Stableford off yellow tees was played
by Joseph Carnell from Exeter. Both are shown in the picture with
Jessica Francis from Churston who had the best score for short
putting.
The best stableford off red tees was
played by Miles Johal of East Devon GC
Long putting was won by Thomas Trowbridge
Downes Crediton GC; pitching by Ed Mann of Portmore GC; chip and run
by Dan Quinlan of Teignmouth GC; and bunker shots by Joe White from
Exeter GC.
The
Academy would like to thank Steph Francis, Junior organiser at
Churston, for acting as starter for the stableford competition. The
coaches are shown on the photograph from left to right
Neil Holman (Torbay DR), Rob Selley (TGC),
Sandy Urquhart (Fingle Glen), Marc Williamson (Woodbury Park), Rob
Humphreys (East Devon), James Urquhart (Fingle Glen), and Craig
Townsend (County Dev Officer).
HARDY TAKES
CAPTAIN'S PRIZE
Rob
Hardy shot an impressive gross 74 to accumulate 41 stableford points
and win the Captain's Prize at Teignmouth. The course was in superb
condition but the weather didn't match it, with heavy rain for the
early starters. A half-way house with BBQ and brewery drinks van
managed to cheer up the competitors and in the evening there was
some lively entertainment where members could show off their
non-golfing talents to their fellow members! Runners up to Rob were
Jeff Leyman (39 points), Paul Soper (39), Tony Jones (38) and Simon
Beasley (38). Playing in the worst of the weather Devon County
player Lloyd Gardner recorded a very credible four under par 66 to
win the Gross Prize.
Teignmouth Vase
Played on Sunday 29th August was won by Ian Wallis with a
superb net 66 off a handicap of 5.
The
course was in excellent condition but a very windy day with a
downpour in the afternoon meant scoring was difficult.
Ian had the worst of the weather but just managed to beat 5 players
who returned 67’s.
Lloyd Gardner continued his rich vein of form with a gross 66 to win
the scratch prize.
Best visitor was Dan Collier of Fingle Glen G C with a net 68.
