Teignmouth Golf Club’s Club Championship
was played on Sunday 8th August 2010

shot a new course record of 64 (5 under par) to win by one shot.
Dave Best won the Naish Salver played off handicap and Lloyd won the

Teignmouth win
Torbay Cup in exciting finish
The Torbay Cup was played for over the weekend of 31st July/1st
August at Stover Golf Club by the six South Devon Clubs; Churston,
Dainton, Stover, Teignmouth, Torquay and Warren.
Teignmouth won the Cup for the 6th time in
7 years by half a point from home club Stover, with Dainton third.
Teignmouth's England International Billy
Hemstock needed a bogey or better up the last hole to edge out
Stover stalwart Jason Hampton, who had sunk an outrageous putt on
the 18th to finish level par. True to form, Billy got his par for a
round of 2 under par 67.
Billy ended up top point scorer for
Teignmouth with 16.5 points, followed by Lloyd Gardner 16 pts, Luke
Radford 15.5 pts, Rory Hunt 15 pts and Jeremy Binch 14.5 pts.
However, this was an impressive overall team performance with other
team members contributing in either the Fourballs, Foursomes,
Singles, or just as caddies; Mark Haskell, Dave Best, Alistair
Smith, Darren Chamberlain, Mark Jarrett, Richard Armitage, Nick
James and Ian Wallis. The squad look forward to defending the trophy
at Dainton in 2011.

Teignmouth clinch the Men's South Devon
League in an exciting climax to the 2009 season.
The final match of the SDL season was
played at Stover on Saturday 3rd October, with second placed Stover
hosting the match against top of the table Teignmouth. In an
exciting match, with the result not known until close to the end,
Teignmouth finally overcame a fighting performance from the home
club and became the overall SDL winners for 2009. Teignmouth went
into the final match with a slender lead over Stover and needed to
win at least three and a half points from a possible nine in order
to take the honours. The match was finally halved with four and a
half points each, giving Teignmouth a total of 53 points for the
season against 50 points for Stover. The Warren were third with 45.5
points.
Point earners for Teignmouth were Dave
Wills & Alan Tolley 4&3, Nick James & Andy Burnham 3&1, Ian Brown &
Dave Turner 1 up, Rory Hunt & Bob Collier all square and Jeremy
Binch & Ian Wallis 5&3.
The match hinged on Brown & Turner
managing to turn around a one hole deficit by winning the last two
holes. Also, worth a mention was the hole-in-one achieved by
Teignmouth's English International Billy Hemstock on the 8th hole.
Despite this ace, and managing birdies on the last two holes,
Hemstock & Haskell lost on the 18th when J. Hampton & T. Mitchell
holed out for a birdie 3 and win 1 up.
A great end to the season... with fitting
celebrations afterwards!!
The SDL 2009 presentations, sponsored by
LANGS, will take place at Torquay Golf Club on the evening of
Saturday 17th October.

GOLF CLUB
CAPTAIN’S CHARITY DAY
RAISES OVER £3000.
On one of the sunniest days of the year so
far, Teignmouth Golf Club enjoyed a superb Captain’s Charity Day in
which over £3000 was raised for one of Club Captain John Hall’s
chosen charities for his year, that being MacMillan Nursing Care.
John said he was overwhelmed with the
generosity of members and sponsors, particularly in these
difficult economic times and just could not believe the support he
received, not only from the membership within the Club but also
local businesses.

John went onto say that, with the
excellent help of his wife Mandy and some of the other Lady Members,
the draw raffle and auction alone produced nearly £2000. In his
speech he did make comment to the superb condition of the golf
course and the excellent catering facilities laid on by Andy and
Tilli and all her staff.
The day itself focused more on fun than
serious golf and there was also other features available on the day
including putting and chipping competitions, whilst you could also
have your car cleaned by the Junior members whilst you were playing
or your clubs cleaned before or after.
In all, the day was a resounding success
and a really big thank you to all concerned.

coached on the practice area and those that wished were able to play
9 holes of golf. The sun shone and despite a couple of showers a
warm welcome was shown to all. More than 30 new members joined on

lunchtime following a quiet AGM the night before. On a sunny day the
drive cleared the gorse and ran down the fairway. A sweepstake was
held that raised £130 for John’s nominated charities, MacMillan
Nurses and NSPCC and over 120 members enjoyed a buffet and wine
provided by the captain. A great day was had by all and the Captain
was quoted: “the follow through almost looked like a professional”

"Congratulations to Deidre Miles
who
was installed as our new Lady Captain at the AGM. Deirdre comes from
a family with a long association with Teignmouth golf club. Many
will remember her father, George Cowl, who was a past Captain.
Deidre has been a member of the club for 9 years and served on the
committee as press officer before becoming Vice Captain last year As
Captain of the Sheelagh Creasy team she was instrumental in leading
them to a magnificent win and she has also organised the friendly
matches. She has been a great support to Vicky, stepping in to her
shoes with great aplomb whilst she was temporarily out of
commission. We all wish her a very happy and successful year. "

English Womens team not quite good
enough
The English Ladies team, captained by
Teignmouth’s Sally Watkins, left the European Ladies Team
Championships in Stenungsund, Sweden empty handed.
Although England were top seeds they lost
a very close encounter in the semi-final against the Netherlands and
were soundly beaten by the superior Spanish team in the play off for
the Bronze Medal
.Sally said ‘ the team played superb golf
in the play off and deserved to get something out of it’.The
foursomes went to the seventeenth in the first match and the
nineteenth in the second match. Both games produced eleven birdies.
The Spanish won the singles by four matches to one.

Festival Week off to a lively start.
A complimentary hot and cold buffet and
dance party was held at the clubhouse on Saturday evening to mark
the start of our Annual Festival Week. Guests and club members were
determined to ignore the cold and wet weather outside and enjoyed a
lively and friendly social evening. The five piece band were right
on the ball with their choice of 60’s and 70’s music and the dance
floor was ‘jumping and jiving’ all night.
Unfortunately the bad weather persisted
overnight and caused the cancellation of the Sunday morning men’s
competition. However, play resumed later in the day and the ladies
were able to complete the Molly Cayless competition albeit in tough
playing conditions
Billy faces tough challenge ahead.
Billy Hemstock heads north to the
Southport and Ainsdale links this week in his final attempt to
secure a place in the Open Championship. He will be competing
against ninety five other professionals and amateurs to win one of
the four qualifying places.
The S&A, as it is known, is a daunting
golfing challenge that has been the venue for two Ryder Cup matches
and several national championships. We all wish Billy the very best
of good fortune.

SIZZLING SUMMER BALL
Over ninety members and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening of dinner
and dance recently on the occasion of Teignmouth Golf Club’s annual
black tie Summer Ball.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a refreshing summer Pimms and
within no time at all we were tucking into a superb four course meal
of salmon fillet, Devon lamb steak and mouth watering summer berry
pavlova. All prepared in house by our own qualified chefs and served
by Caroline’s friendly and efficient staff.
When dinner was nearly over, Paul Brinton, the Club captain and his
good lady Janet, took to the floor to get the dancing underway. The
unusually named Quinious Action seven piece band and singers were
magnificent and kept the dance floor packed until the early hours –
all in all a fantastic evening.
Several members have written in to say what a really good time they
had and the overall feedback is ‘can’t wait for the next one’. If
you missed out on this occasion make sure you check the notice
board. There are lots of entertaining evenings being arranged for
you and your families.
