The CAPTAIN'S
DIARY

At last
welcome to summer! We have had some glorious sunshine but
combined with our usual windy weather.
We had a
fantastic time at the summer ball with my guests and family and
strangely woke with a migraine on the Sunday. It was great fun
and the dance floor was buzzing.
On the same
day, 21st June, we played the Peter Ward Mackenzie
Trophy. Congratulations go to John Cary, Tony Jones and Brian
Trewhela for their win with 47 pts.
July 5th
Many thanks to all who made such a fantastic effort to make the
festival week. The week proved to be a great success despite the
bad weather.
Captains
Safari to Stover was yet another very enjoyable day. The sun
shone before we teed up but then it proceeded to drizzle all the
way round. All who attended had great fun with the texas
scramble working in teams. I would like to thank everyone for
their support in making it such a successful day.
20th July
Club Championship. Dave Best had a fantastic back to back win
with a gross score of 152 pts and will be going for the record
of 3 years in the trot next year.
26th July
Teignmouth Cup and George Thomas scratch trophy.
Congratulations to Richard Armitage for winning both cups with a
tremendous net score of 63 and 68 (131) and gross 66 and 71
(137).
July 27th.
Our boys did us proud in the Palairet Plate finals day, only
losing 3 – 2 to Saunton GC on the 19th hole in the 5th
match. Thanks to all for their gallant effort.
Just a
little housekeeping. Please support our Torbay Cup side on
Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd August at
TGC. We have a strong side that I believe can win this cup a
record 5th time in a row. (No team has ever won it 5
times).
Your Club
Captain’s Day is on Saturday 18th August. A board competition
is running from 8.00 to 2.00, followed by a ladies 9 hole 3 ball
team event, and a junior 9 hole 3 ball team event. All this
golf will be followed by a disco and BBQ in the evening so
please support and bring along the family. Fingers crossed for
good weather and it should be a fun day!

A VIEW FROM THE OFFICE
The Child
Protection Policy is being updated to conform to current
guidelines and the changes
are
outlined in this newsletter. Please read them as they are
important in protecting the well being of our Juniors.
I was so
looking forward to Festival Week and despite rotten weather it
was still great fun.
The 73
visitors enjoyed themselves and all bar 2 competitions were
completed.
Congratulations to Richard Armitage on his 66 gross in the
Teignmouth Cup and to Dave Best for retaining the Club
Championship.
The 2009
diary is nearing completion and events will be more evenly
spread out wherever possible.
Finally it
is nice to have some summer in Devon – all 7 days of it !!

Social Matters
As I am
sure you will read in other sections of this newsletter,
Festival Week was a great success in spite of the weather! All
the visitors appeared to have a good time and the social events
were well attended. Many thanks go to the members who supported
us, a lot at short notice.
The band on
the opening welcome evening, Exeter Tornadoes, had everyone up
on their feet dancing to the sixties/seventies music that
followed the wonderful Italian buffet supplied by Caroline and
her staff, a good time was had by all.
The race
night run by Mandy and John Hall, ably assisted by Declan
Flanagan, was a great success, and the bangers and mash supper
half way through was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
For those
who had never attended a murder mystery evening before (myself
included) the Thursday evening was a revelation. We were served
a wonderful four course meal, during which complete strangers
acted out a drama amongst us. We were all invited to join a film
appreciation club run by (as it turned out ) the killer, who
killed her rival, after we had been embroiled in the
various relationships among the cast!
What fun,
what good food, what a lovely way to spend an evening!
If you are
hoping to go on the London theatre trip and haven't yet put your
name on the lists that are on the various notice boards in the
Club – do it soon, or you will miss out. The lists are coming
down on Wednesday 13th August so that we can get
the hotel and various theatre seats organised and booked to suit
everyone, therefore names and deposits must be taken early. Do
not leave it to the last minute, and be disappointed. You
have been warned!

LADIES
SECTION
Has summer
really come at last? Oh I do hope so. We won’t talk about
festival week and the monsoon that descended on the Lady
Captains Safari Day. Fortunately Vicky was on the case and
managed to cancel our trip the day before, much to the relief of
the ladies who avoided getting wet and hairstyles remained
intact. Then last week we had fantastic weather for the
Championship and the Foursomes events and all was well with the
world again. It was back to cloud again on Lady Captains
Day, but at least the rain stayed off until the afternoon.
Competitions
We started
the month with the second round of the Lucas Cup and County
Stableford. The Lucas cup is an eclectic competition over two
rounds and was very hotly contested resulting in a tie for
first place by Miranda Hruby and Carole Jackson with net 72.5
who have been declared joint winners of the trophy. The
Stableford was won by Jean Doddington.
The Killard-
Leavey Foursomes was won by the partnership of Mary Dummett &
Liz Hunt who will represent Teignmouth in the finals on 8th
September at Honiton.
The Ladies
Championship was played this year as a 36 hole competition over
2 days on 22nd & 23rd July for both silver
and bronze players. There were some excellent scores with our
captain Vicky Holloway showing us the way as our champion
winning the O ‘Geary Cup with a gross score of 162. Janet
Turner won the Handicap Salver with net 142 and Enid Norrington
won the Joyce Wilson Trophy in the bronze section having had an
amazing net 68 on the first day. Congratulations and well played
to our winners.
Vicky
organised a brilliant day for her Lady Captains Day with a mix
of an individual stableford competition , a 9 hole 4BBB team
competition with 3 ladies and 1 junior , chipping and putting
competitions and a fiendish quiz. The captain’s prize was won by
Rosemary Watson. The team event was won by Janet Schofield,
Rosie Burnham, Vicky Dimmock and Daniel Quinlan. The quiz was
won on a tie breaker by Annemarie Boyne, Sue Widdowson and
Lorraine Gorman. The chipping competition was won by Gillian
Hepburn and the putting competition by Sue Ansell. There were
many other prizes and uniquely each prizewinner was able to
choose their own prize. One junior was overheard advising his
grandmother to choose the chocolates! Many thanks to Derek
Holloway and Maurice Bell for doing the registration and score
cards, Chloe and Tracy for assisting in the welcome halfway
house refreshment tent and a very special thank you to the
juniors for helping to make it such a great event.
The girls
continue to make their mark out of town. Pat Goodey was the
championship runner up in the DCLVGA Vets Championship held at
Stover on 17th July with gross 90 and our vice
captain Deidre Miles won the Handicap Trophy with a brilliant
net 71 ahead of Jean Doddington in second place with net 77.
Vicky Holloway got through the first day of the SW Championship
played at Tiverton qualifying in the top
32.
Unfortunately she lost in the final round but what an
achievement. Much further afield Joy Johnston won the Gold
Medal in the Swedish Seniors Open played over 36 holes at
Mariestad in Sweden competing against 98 players.
Matches
Congratulations
to both the Still Cup and Creasy Bowl teams who have won
through again this year to the next stage of their
competitions. The Still Cup team had a fantastic 7-0 win
against Churston at home on 28th July securing
their place in the semi finals at Dainton on 28th
Aug. The Creasy Bowl team also had a great 6-1 win in their
last match at home on 1st July against Sidmouth
and having won five of their six matches have qualified for
the quarter finals to be held at Fingle Glen on Friday 1st
September . Both teams are really keen to bring home some
silver this year.
The
Presidents Trophy Team are still in the throes of battle
in their competition, but after securing a good home win
against Stover 6 – 1 on 21st July are looking
forward to continuing their success with the remaining
matches.

The
Juliet Flanagan Foursomes competition was played on Friday
25th July by kind sponsorship of Declan Flanagan.
The winners with 38 points were Bill & Rosemary McGrane. In

has scored an ace at this hole and brings his overall tally to
three.
Mention in Despatches
There were
several good performances by Teignmouth Seniors this month.
Well done,
Bill and Rosemary McGrane for coming first against a very strong
field last week to win the Juliet Flanagan Mixed Foursomes with
38 points.
Barrie
Doddington and his partner Tony Jeffs won the Hele Park Seniors
Invitation when they beat off forty one teams with a better ball
score of 41 points.
Barrie
enjoyed the long overdue experience so much he helped himself to
another win at the East Devon Seniors Open later in the week.
Congratulations go to Messrs Hodgson and Munson for finishing
third and fourth respectively in last week’s Wednesday Roll-Up
with 36 and 35 points off the white tees. Finally a well done
goes to Malcolm Tester for two very good rounds in the Club
Championship

Professional
TIP OF THE MONTH:
The importance of the posture in the golf swing.
Most
club golfers do not realise that the posture (the angle
created between your spine and the ground) directly effect’s
the plane and path that you swing the club on. This is due
to the manner in which the shoulders turn.
In Fig
1, the posture is too upright (the player is standing
too tall) therefore as the shoulders turn away, the club
is swung around the body making the swing to flat.
If the
player goes too far the other way and bends over too much,
they will find that they struggle to turn their shoulders at
all and the swing will be dominated by the arms.
In
fig 2, the posture is correct and as
you
can see, as the player turns their shoulders away the left
shoulder starts to point more towards the ball at the top of
the back swing.
The simplest way to check and correct your posture is to
ensure that your hands and arms hang straight down from
your shoulders and that there is just over a fist distance
between the butt of the club and the left thigh (Body shape
and size do however need to be taken into consideration). If
these two check points are correct then the posture should
be correct. If the hands are less than a fist distance from
the left thigh, then the chances are the posture will be too
upright. If the distance is too great then you will more
than likely be too crouched.
